see it and believe it

Our adventures in Baltimore...
Before our hands became covered in Old Bay, Dad and I took pictures of each other enjoying local beer and local crabs at Bo Brooks. We weren't able to touch anything else until our hands/arms got soaked in lemon water. And we could still smell the greatness of Old Bay on our hands the next morning. YUMM!

The view from our hotel room. I might have given Dad the tickets to game, but he snagged this awesome room all on his own. Needless to say, we took in the view of the stadium a lot.

The annual "Dad's Weekend" picture. Add it to the collection.

The crowd before the game on Eutaw Street.

The front and back view of me with my favorite player, Cal Ripken! I've been a fan of Cal since grade school. Now I have a shirt and my picture with his number! Woohoo!

The front and backside of Dad with his favorite Oriole, Brooks Robinson, a native of Little Rock, Arkansas.

Irony... gotta love it. The usher who took our tickets was named Bob. My Dad's brother, Bob, gave him the Brooks Robinson uniform.

Boog Powell, #26. Thirty minutes later, we meet him.

Dad chatting with Boog, after Boog signed that baseball for him.

The zoom and crop version.

Derek Jeter up to bat. At this point, he was 0-4. He couldn't stop the Orioles this time!

O-bird sat down to give Dad a back rub. To put it mildly, Dad was a bit startled. It all had something to do with that shirt he wore. He stood out, whether he wanted to or not.

Then I had to get a picture. Capping on a fantastic night, a fantastic vacation, and AN INCREDIBLE WIN by the Orioles. Document it: Orioles beat the Yankee's 5-4 and the Orioles are now 4-16. Once an Orioles fan, always an Orioles fan. Go Birds!

the history

Arkansas does not have a Major League Baseball team, but a growing boy with a love of the sport has to find a team to follow. My Dad, being the son of a Chicago White Sox fan, one would think following the Sox might come naturally, or having an older brother who finally declared himself a New York Yankee’s fan, but no, all three men have their own teams. My Dad’s team: The Baltimore Orioles

It has been about 25 years since my dad has been to Baltimore for a game, and it’s taken us a while to get to an Orioles game. I’ve been trying to go for over two years. It has taken, pulling strings, booking incorrect tickets, asking favors and pulling strings to finally get this three-day trip finalized.

Let me fill you in on why I have been trying to take my Dad to an Orioles game for the past two years.

One weekend in September 2008 my Dad had two events to attend… in two different states. One was in his own backyard: a big engagement party for one of my sister’s dearest friends, Molly Merry Campbell. The other was my last Dad’s Weekend of college! Knowing he didn’t want to miss the party, my sister definitely did not want him to miss the party, and let’s face it… neither did I… we all attended the party in the backyard with wonderful friends.

Since “Dad’s weekend” had been missed I had the brilliant idea to get my Dad tickets to an Orioles vs. Cardinals game, which if you know anything about Major League baseball, then you know the only time these two teams place is during spring training, or at least that was the case during Spring 2009.

This is the picture from Christmas 2008.

On the baseball my Dad unwrapped was the date of the game and all the details. In January, Dad was looking at the schedule on the Orioles Web site and he noticed that the game I had planned for us to go to was not at Busch Stadium in St.Louis, Missouri, but at the Cardinals Spring training field in Florida. Well that was settled, neither of us could get down to Florida on a Tuesday night for a game.

Attempt 1: failed. Nonetheless, we had a successful trip to St.Louis for a Cardinals vs. Mets game.

Attempt 2: PLAN: break down and buy tickets for a game IN BALTIMORE.

This was no easy task though. If you know my dad, getting him away from work is like pulling teeth. Marilyn Riley, a part-time pharmacist that helps my Dad out tremendously at the drug store, became a part of the scheme. I found a game on a Tuesday in April IN BALTIMORE that could possibly work. Calling Marilyn, back in October or so, I asked her if she had plans for April 26-28, 2010. When she said she didn’t I let out a big sigh of relief and then asked her if she would pencil in those dates to definitely be at the drug store. An added plus was that these are her normal days to work at the store. Marilyn was in! But no one else knew. Neither Mom nor Mickey knew. To pull everything off, I would first have to check about tickets, which wouldn’t go on sale until basically right before Christmas.

Planning was going smoothly. Now, how was I going to “give” my Dad the gift? For some reason we always put a calendar in my Dad’s stocking. Usually it’s some sports-trivia daily calendar or something like that, but Mom had not picked one up yet, so I said I’d handle it. While Christmas shopping in NY I found a calendar of a dozen baseball stadiums, new and old, and their story, etc. I took the plastic off, flipped to April, and highlighted what would be “Dad’s Weekend 2010.”

Since Christmas, it has been hanging up at the drug store, on the wall to the right of the Coke machine. While my uncle, my Dad’s older brother, was visiting New York before Christmas, I filled him in on the tickets to the game. Well, what do ya know! His present to my Dad went together perfectly.

Pictures of Uncle Bob giving Dad his Christmas gift, a Brooks Robinson uniform:

A special thanks to my Mom and Marilyn for running statements while Joe's gone. And special thanks to Jeremy Wolfe to coming to the store Tuesday and helping out.

We all know Joe needs this little vacation!

i'll get back to you on wednesday

Today is equivalent to Christmas Eve in April.

For Christmas I gave my Dad two tickets to an Orioles baseball game in Baltimore. After waiting four months, the trip has finally arrived. I'm taking a train while he is on a plane and we are meeting in Baltimore around noon today. The game is tomorrow night versus the New York Yankees.

We'll be sporting orange, and cheering for a 2-game winning streak! The Orioles beat the Boston Red Sox last night 7-6! Go birds!

Three years of Dad's weekend football games and two years of baseball games, this tradition might be here to stay. Here is a picture from last year's "Dad's weekend" in St.Louis.

Pictures and a full report will be up as soon as I return. Have a great week everyone!

invest in a wireless router

i'll make this short and sweet because I need to get back to work... working on my Web site that is. Oh, by the way, it is finally coming together as long as I can stay awake it'll be up and ready in no time.

$30 for a wireless router was an investment I made a few months ago, so that I could lay on my bed and surf the internet instead of being right by the window. A little pathetic, or so I thought. A little place across the street from my apartment has quaint seating, good coffee and delicious and affordable sandwiches. I got off work this morning and I haven't been too tired, so I decided to hit the ground running and get out of my apartment and get down to business. I didn't have to have the internet to work on my Web site (that sounds ironic, but true), but it's always a plus to have wireless access.

Low and behold, my wireless connection is available at Arte! Not only do I have my secure network, but I have a full signal.

Another reason I love New York. Sorry Mom and Dad, but you guys can't even get a signal in every room of the house!

Happy Tuesday.

what are you doing at 4:00 am

4:13 a.m.

Sleeping? Really. Ah, your sleepin' your life away! Just kidding.
Let me preface this post by saying I slept Monday from 6:30p.m. until Tuesday 12:30p.m. with a 'break' in the middle from 2-4am. No, I am not crazy. I got off work Monday morning at 7 and was scheduled to go back to work at 10p.m., but that shift got canceled, so this week my schedule is more off than usual.Preface finished. Now for the disclaimer:
I am healthy! While I'm having dinner, you all are probably having breakfast, but I promise, I am eating three meals a day, going to the gym, and getting enough sleep. I might look like this at 4:00 a.m. (picture actually taken minutes ago); but come on.... no one looks their greatest at this time.

4:20 a.m.

Now that you all have caught up with me, let me fill you in on my day, if you can call it "a day."

I do not like to consider myself a procrastinator because really, I'm not, I am very productive. For those who work at home on a regular day to day basis, I pose the question: "Is your home immaculately clean?" (oh yeah, anyone reading this and works at home probably has a home office... so do I. It's called my apartment).

This week is kind of exciting. I get to do what I WANT to do from Monday 7:00 a.m. until Thursday at 10:00 p.m.. Basically 3 whole days to work on my Web site. Time to mark the ten hundred things off my to-do list. I am the type of person who has to have everything in order before I can begin working. In this sense, I am a procrastinator because I won't start "working" until:
  • my bed is made, sheets changed if needed
  • the sink is empty
  • the bathroom is sparkling
  • the shelves are dusted
  • all my clothes are put away
  • the trash has been taken out
  • the floor is swept and vacuumed
  • I've caught up on bills
  • etc.
  • etc.
  • etc.
As you can see, this is why "my office" usually becomes a coffee shop or bookstore. But not today. I did all of the above and had lunch around 7:30 and then zoned in. I planned to have two breaks. One, video chat with my friends in Columbia, Kaci and Elise, which was definitely worth the hour break. The second was to make dinner. A southern staple: biscuits and gravy (no sausage).

Ever since I have been working on my Web site, being very productive, and actually much closer to launching 'd by M: designs by Maggie Searcy.'

Two of my best friends. Elise and Kaci. They're great, aren't they! They will love that I put this on my blog ;-)

a few photos

The other day when I was in the park, I decided to walk my normal route instead of whizzing by unobservantly. Here are a few snap shots I took along the way. Spring in New York is gorgeous.

cherry blossoms

Birthdays and bunnies were the theme of Easter weekend. Thursday evening, after having drinks with my friend Anna and Teri, Art Director of the Wall Street Journal magazine and newspaper, I grabbed a cab to Penn Station. Due to the weeks previous events: shredding my Arkansas driver’s license and receiving an “interim license” from the state of New York, I was unable to use the Amtrak kiosk that is much quicker than the big ticket line, but with mere minutes to spare I was on my way to visit my eldest cousin, Elizabeth Searcy.

I arrived shortly after midnight on Friday, April 2. “HAPPY, HAPPY BIRTHDAY LIZ!!” We caught a cab, arrived at Liz’s apartment and crashed. Liz had to be at work Friday morning, but I had no obligations, so I slept. And slept some more. After getting up at nearly 2:00p.m. I got in touch with Liz and walked down towards Dupont Circle to meet her for lunch. She had to go back to work, so I took a run through the neighborhood and explored more of DC. I have not been to DC since I was 14, except for Fourth of July weekend, 2008 (but technically I was in Virginia the entire time, so it doesn’t really count).

Later that evening Liz and I met up with her friend Grace and had a birthday dinner at a little French restaurant, Bistrot Du Coin. I had the pan-seared Rockfish with a side of spinach. MMMMM!

Afterwards, we met several of Liz’s friends, picked up some wine and headed to HR-57 for the evening. It was a unanimous agreement that HR-57 is the best name for a Jazz club in DC. "HR-57 Center for the Preservation of Jazz Blues is a music cultural center. We take our name from a House Resolution first passed by congress in 1987. This resolution (H.Con.Res 57) designated jazz as 'a rare and valuable national American treasure.'"

Saturday. We got to sleep in… well, for Liz that was till 10a.m., but me, well… Liz finally made me wake up a little after 1 o’clock. What can I say, I work the graveyard shift and the lack of sleep is evident. Anyways, Saturday might have gotten a late start but we didn’t miss anything. We took the Metro down to the Mall, stopped at a cheese and sandwich shop, Cowgirl Creamery, picked up several goodies and then sat on the steps of the National Museum of Art and ate lunch, enjoying the sunshine and warm weather. Liz wanted to show me a few things in the museum so we did a quick run though before heading to see the cherry blossoms.

Elizabeth and I sitting in the indoor atrium at the National Portrait Gallery and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.

Very cool exhibit of artists' notebooks, journals, thoughts, sketches, etc.

Put it on your bucket list… must see cherry blossoms in DC during their peak. I can promise you it is worth dodging people left and right to see the trees lining the Tidal Basin. I am happy to say that Spring has sprung and this was the perfect weekend to kick start the month of April. Liz and I walked around the Tidal Basin, snapped pictures, saw the Thomas Jefferson Memorial, the FDR Memorial, Korean War Veterans Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, Vietnam Veterans Memorial, as well as the Washington Monument and reflecting pool. Here are pictures from the day.

Our dinner that Elizabeth made - shrimp etouffee! I made the salad. We ate outside on her patio.

After eating around 11 o'clock Saturday evening we caught some zzzz's in order to wake up in time for church. We made it just in time for the 9:00 a.m. service at St. Margaret's Episcopal Church.

Overall, a great weekend with a great cousin.

spring spring spring

This weeks update. It's finally Spring. As much as I love cold weather and Winter, my favorite time of year is when the seasons change. From Winter to Spring and from Summer to Fall. The park is in bloom and people are out like rats on trash day... kidding.

I think the change of seasons and the excess sunshine has put me not only in a permanent good mood, but inspired me to write more on my blog. More things to see and do and tell you about.

I've been quite the jet-setter the past few months, which isn't slowing down any time soon. Tonight I am catching the train at Penn Station and heading to D.C. to visit my cousin, Elizabeth. Tomorrow is her 27th birthday. I'll post pictures of the cherry blossoms and the wonderful city of DC, so check back soon. Everyone have a great Easter/Passover and a wonderful weekend. Hope you all have great weather and enjoy the sunshine.

To Mimi and Patpat: Your Easter cards just made it to the mailbox yesterday, so they won't get to you till next week, but keep a look out for them. Love you both. XOXO.

P.S. Oh, and for my engaged/married friends, let me tell you all congratulations so that no one feels left out... Elise.

The line-up of weddings:
Jenna Lands, May 1
Matt Sidesinger and Annie Harp, May 30, Kansas City, Mo
Elise White and JJ Bennett, September 4, Kansas City, Mo
Christine Cloninger and Justin Devore, TBA

I believe this is all I have on my calendar right now.
